One of the fundamental concepts in Git is the staging area, also known as the index, which plays a crucial role in tracking and organizing changes before they are committed to the repository. Git Staging
Git staging is the process of preparing changes to your files for a commit. When you make changes to a file in your working directory, those changes are not immediately committed to your Git repository. Instead, they are staged in a temporary area called the staging area. This gives you a chance to review the changes you have made and decide which ones you want to commit.
Why Staging and Why not skip it?
There are a few reasons why staging is a useful feature in Git.
It allows you to make multiple changes to your files without having to commit them all at once. This can be helpful if you are working on a complex project and you want to be able to commit your changes in logical chunks.
Staging allows you to control which changes are included in a commit. This can be useful if you want to commit only certain changes, such as bug fixes or new features.
How does Staging work?
To stage a change in Git, we use the git add command. The git add command takes the name of the file you want to stage as an argument.
For example, to stage the file index.html, we will run the following command:
git add index.html
We can stage multiple files at once, using
git add index.html styles.css scripts.jsand we can stage all the files present in the directory, using
git add .
We can review Staged Changes, Verify the changes you have staged by using git diff --staged or git diff --cached. This command shows the differences between the staging area and the last commit
To unstage the changes
If you want to unstage the change you don't want we can use git reset, this command takes file names as an argument
For example, we want to unstage index.html file, we will run the following command:
git reset index.html
Same as staging we can unstage multiple files at once, using
git reset index.html styles.css scripts.js
Git Committing Changes
Once you have staged the changes you want to commit, you can use the git commit command to commit them to your Git repository.
The git commit command takes a commit message as an argument. The commit message should briefly describe the changes you have made.
For example, to commit the changes you have staged, run the following command:
git commit -m "New feature added"
